DMHC announces 2014 “Right Care Initiative” award recipients

Health plans and medical groups honored for work to fight the biggest killers: heart attacks, strokes and diabetic complications

(Sacramento) – Today, California Department of Managed Health Care (DMHC) Director Shelley Rouillard announced the recipients of the 2014 Right Care Initiative awards. Awards are given annually to California health plans and medical groups who meet clinical performance standards for controlling blood pressure, blood sugar and/or cholesterol. Launched in 2008, the Right Care Initiative is a public-private collaborative effort focused on preventing premature disability and death from heart attacks, strokes and diabetic complications.

“Managing chronic conditions greatly benefits all Californians through reducing preventable disability and death, leading to lower health care costs,” said Director Rouillard. “Today’s award winners have demonstrated an enhanced commitment to improving care and the health of Californians.”

2014 health plan award winners for the prevention of heart attacks, strokes and diabetic complications:

  • Kaiser Health Plan North – Gold Award
  • Kaiser Health Plan South – Silver Award
  • Anthem Blue Cross – Bronze Award
  • Chinese Community Health Plan – Bronze Award
  • Sharp Health Plan – Bronze Award
  • Cigna Health Plan- Nephrology Care  – Honorable Mention

The statewide goal of the Right Care Initiative is for all California health plans and medical groups to reach the 90th percentile of performance in the prevention of heart attacks, strokes and diabetic complications through the control of blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol as published in the national Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) and Integrated Health Care Association’s Pay for Performance program.  Specific scores can be found on www.OPA.ca.gov (see scores for the Sacramento area).
