DMHC announces 2015 “Right Care Initiative” award recipients

Health plans and medical groups honored for work to fight the biggest killers: heart attacks, strokes and diabetic complications

(Sacramento) – Today, the California Department of Managed Health Care (DMHC) announced the recipients of the 2015 Right Care Initiative awards. Awards are given annually to California health plans and medical groups who meet clinical performance standards for controlling blood pressure, blood sugar and/or cholesterol. Launched in 2008, the Right Care Initiative is a public-private collaborative effort focused on preventing premature disability and death from heart attacks, strokes and complications from diabetes.

“Effectively managing chronic conditions not only improves the quality of life for patients, it also helps to lower costs,” said Director Rouillard. “I congratulate all of this year’s award recipients for their hard work to better manage health outcomes and improve the health of California’s health care consumers.”

2015 health plan award winners for the prevention of heart attacks, strokes and diabetic complications:

  • Kaiser Health Plan North – Gold Award
  • Kaiser Health Plan South – Silver Award
  • Sharp Health Plan – Bronze Award

2015 medical group award winners:
Top level awards for meeting all control measures for the prevention of heart attacks, strokes and diabetic complications

  • Edinger Medical Group – Platinum Award
  • Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group – Platinum Award

Tier two awards for controlling at least one of the 2015 key measures (Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar)

2015 Leadership Awards:

  • Dr. Anthony DeMaria, Lifetime Leadership Award for significant achievements in better health outcomes through leading the University of Best Practices, San Diego.
  • Dr. Chloe Bird, Leadership Award for improving women’s cardiovascular outcomes and reducing gender disparities.

The statewide goal of the Right Care Initiative is for all California health plans and medical groups to reach the national 90th percentile of performance in the prevention of heart attacks, strokes and complications from diabetes through the control of blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol as published in the national Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) and the Integrated Health Care Association’s Pay for Performance program.
