DMHC attorney Pat Sturdevant named the 2008 Attorney of the Year in the healthcare category by California Lawyer magazine

(Sacramento) – Department of Managed Health Care (DMHC) Staff Counsel Pat Sturdevant has been recognized as the Attorney of the Year in the category of healthcare by California Lawyer magazine. A total of 34 attorneys around the state received the honor at the twelfth annual California Lawyer Attorneys of the Year Award ceremony in San Francisco on March 4. The awards recognize 22 accomplishments in 16 areas of legal practice.

Since joining the DMHC in 2002, Pat has focused on consumer issues, working to end the illegal rescission of health insurance and stop fraudulent discount plans from victimizing consumers, and always holding health plans accountable for complying with the law. In addition, she increased the awareness of organ donation by negotiating a media campaign grant provided by a health plan.

“The DMHC is fortunate to have one of the strongest patients' rights attorneys in the state,” said Cindy Ehnes, Director of the DMHC. “Pat Sturdevant has distinguished herself in her field by pioneering innovative approaches to health care regulation and enforcement. She has demonstrated that she is committed to ensuring that consumer protection laws are followed and that those who violate these laws are held accountable.”
