Public Education Campaign Targets High Price of Dental Coverage Program comes to Sacramento in honor of National Children’s Dental Health Month

(Sacramento) – The California Department of Managed Health Care (DMHC) teamed up with First Dental Health (FDH) to bring its public health education campaign to Sacramento in honor of National Children’s Dental Health Month.

The campaign is designed to address the availability and need for accessible dental care for the nearly 15 million dentally uninsured Californians. The campaign came to American Lakes Elementary School in Sacramento today, where first graders were given free oral health assessments. More than 51 million school hours are lost a year because of dental-related illness.

During National Children’s Dental Health Month, parents are encouraged to model good dental care habits, and make sure that every member of the family has regular check-ups. Dental care should begin with a baby's first tooth -- parents should gently brush or wipe baby teeth, and make annual dental appointments beginning with the first birthday.

In addition, the DMHC is reminding parents of a new state law, AB 1433. requiring children to receive dental health checkups in their first year of public school. With the end of the school year fast approaching, the oral health screenings at American Lakes Elementary will help parents meet this state requirement.

Other campaign efforts will include similar visits to communities throughout the state, including Los Angeles, the Inland Empire, and the Bay Area, to provide free oral health assessments to elementary school students, participate in community events, and work with other health-related organizations to raise awareness of the correlation between oral health and overall health. Education materials will be distributed through partnership programs with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the California State Parent Teachers Association (PTA) and the California School Nurses Organization.
